Plush Pizza- Gluten Free 2

Plush Pizza is a vegetarian pizza, yes all vegetarian!

Back when the vegan fitness guys were in town, we went to plush. Everyone ordered regular chunky pizzas and I had the ben special on a gf base. I love this pesto topped pizza with a touch of balsamic vinegar, tomatoes, red onion, mushrooms and avocado. Thankfully the avocado is not cooked, I hate cooked avocado. Rochelle's friend Andrea also got a gluten free pizza, so we exchanged a few pieces. You can see a half eaten piece of hers on my pic at the top. She got a chunky pizza which comes with all of the regular toppings like tofu, olives, mushrooms etc except for the soy sausages which aren't gf. It's like a regular pizza with everything on it except it also has gherkins on it. I also enjoyed it but missed the sausages. As much as I love the ben special, it's good to have a bit of variety so was thankful that she wanted to share!

As for the gf bases, I think I was perhaps a bit harsh on my last post. I'm not sure if they were just having a bad day the last time with their bases, or if my tolerance for gf bases has changed but their gf bases were fine. They are quite thin but didn't have quite the undercooked feel that I remembered. I will aim to go back again before they sell their premise which likely won't be until at least the end of the year.

I don't think there has been any other reviews since last year when Carla, Steph and Cindy blogged about it.

By the way, if you google plush pizza then this site comes up, plush pizza, literally!

Eat Pizza- Mini Post

Just a quick post to say that Eat Pizza is still my favourite gluten free pizza and they are still super generous with their cheezly. I always order the same, the garlic pizza and the vegetarian pizza with vegan cheese and gluten free crust. Toby always ordered a regular pizza with vegan salami. So so good on a friday night when you want greasy fast food!

Beetroot Pepperoni and Pizza Base Comparison

As soon as we received beetroot in our food co op box last week, I thought here is my chance to make the beetroot pepperoni, I've been intrigued by the idea since I saw it on diet dessert and dogs.

Beetroot Pepperoni from diet dessert and dogs
3-4 very small fresh beets, peeled and sliced extremely thin
1 Tbsp (15 ml) extra virgin olive oil, preferably organic
2 Tbsp (30 ml) Bragg’s liquid aminos OR tamari OR soy sauce
1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable broth
1/4-1/2 tsp (1-2.5 ml) liquid smoke, to your taste*
1 tsp (5 ml) apple cider vinegar
2-3 drops plain stevia liquid or 1/4 tsp (1 ml) sugar
1/4 tsp (1 ml) garlic powder
1/4 tsp (1 ml) onion powder
1/4 tsp (1 ml) ground mustard
1/4 tsp (1 ml) fennel (ground is preferred)
1/8 tsp (.5 ml) sage
1/4 tsp (1 ml) smoked or regular paprika
Preheat oven to 325F (170 C).
Place everything except the beets in the bottom of a 9-inch (22.5 cm) square glass pan or a casserole dish and combine well.  Add the beet slices and toss to coat them all; spread them out as well as you can (overlapping slices is okay).
Bake the slices, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, then remove from the oven and flip them over and around to re-coat them with marinade and switch the bottom slices to the top and top to the bottom as much as possible. Continue to bake and stir them up every 10-15 minutes until they have absorbed most of the marinade, are very soft, and begin to curl and crisp at the edges. Remove from oven and set aside until you need them for the pizza.

It was a bit time consuming to make, cooking for at least 60 minutes in total before it was ready and didn't taste exactly taste like pepperoni but had a lovely salty/smokey flavour.

We used half of it on our cream cheese pasta leftovers and then I had to make pizza. We both preferred it on pizza as it become slightly crispy. I purchased two ready made crusts to make the pizza. The Dovedail rice chia pizza bases from the health food store and the simply wise pizza crust from coles. The dovedail package contained 2 bases and the simply wise packet contained 3.

Here is the simply wise ones, which are smaller than the dovedail ones. I put the same topping on each pizza- Leggo's pizza sauce, cheddar cheezly, beetroot pepperoni slices, smoked tofu, pineapple pieces and capsicum. The toppings were a surprisingly good combination. The instructions said to bake the bases for 7-10 minutes but I ended up baking them for about 20 minutes.  These pizza bases are made from mostly rice flour, tapioca and potato starch. They also contain herbs in the actual base which we couldn't really taste.

They are thinner and kind of crunchy and Toby I agreed that we preferred this option as he said 'it's not bad for gluten free pizza'. Although it still kind of still felt like it was slightly under cooked in the middle.

I've used the same size plate so you can see the slightly bigger size difference with the dovedail bases. There are not as many ingredients in these as they mostly consist of rice flour and chia seeds so they appear to be the healthier option.

And here's an inside shot. The instructions didn't say how long to cook for, but I cooked these for about 20 minutes. These were fine, but in comparison they were quite doughy and kind of felt like we eating pizza on top of warm bread.

The simply wize bases were $6.45 from coles and I think the dovedail bases were a similar price if not slightly more.  While the dovedail bases were slightly larger in circumference and thicker there was only 2, so the 3 simply wize ones work out to be better value.  In our mind the simply wize were superior in terms of texture and they are also more convenient too since most coles seem to stock them in the health food section. We will definitely make them again. I'm embarrassed to say that we ate all 5 pizzas on Friday night but were extremely full. I think that 3 would be fine served with some salad and/or garlic bread for 2 regular eaters. Since Toby doesn't count :P

Basil Pizza & Pasta

As we made our way to the airport I commented to Toby that the only place I was slightly sad about missing out on was Basil Pizza. We arrived at the airport and discovered that our flight was cancelled so was given the option to get a refund and make our own way back or get on a flight the following day and our accommodation would be reimbursed. We decided to abandon Cindy and Michael and stay an extra night since it was going to work out to be a financial loss if we made our own way back. Also, it meant we got to stay and have Pizza with Bec and Craig. After our massive breaky and yum cha, Toby and I were originally planning on going without dinner but since we were in Sydney for another night we planned to make the most of it.

Naked Expresso is a omni pizza place at night, which offers several vegan pizzas. While the guys popped out to get beer, Bec and I were given ordering responsibilities. We didn't hesitate in ordering the Hawaiian pizza with 'ham', pineapple and a decent amount of cheezly, it was exactly as I remembered Hawaiian pizza and I'm really not sure why more of the vegan friendly pizza places here don't put 'ham' on their pizzas, this was the group favourite:
We also ordered the 'Sheree and Neridah' with dijon mustard, artichoke hearts, roasted red capsicum, olives and sun dried tomatoes. It was tangy but worked well together as a combination:

We also ordered some garlic 'pizza bread' which kind of reminded me of crisp focaccia:
We were impressed with how straight forward their pizzas were, no strange combination or fancy sauces just simple old fashioned pizzas with a vegan touch. They have g/f bases too!

Plush toppings are great but.....

Their g/f bases really are horrible. This was my second time trying the g/f bases. The texture is quite hard and cardboard like. I've tried g/f pizzas at eat pizza and nostralis and both have pretty good bases. I know that plush like nostralis don't make their own g/f bases, so I just want to point out there are better g/f vegan pizza bases out there plush. Please consider changing them, even if it costs more, I'm willing to pay a little more for a better base. It's such a shame because we are big fans of plush and think that their toppings are the most interesting.

This time we shared a garlic pizza, I love the simplicity of this pizza- cheezly, garlic, and parsley.

A tom yum pizza with tomato , mushrooms, capsicum, fried tofu, coriander and tom yum sauce, it's mild and tasty:

and tropical with pesto, pineapple, red onion ad fried tofu. I love the addition of pesto on a Hawaiian style pizza:

and my fav satay, with mushrooms, zucchini, satay sauce, red onion, and coriander. Satay sauce really does belong on pizza.

Nostralis Wholemeal Vegetarian PIzza II

Long time no see, vegans!

Last week, Kristy and I went to Bec and Craig's place to eat pizza and watch Empire Strikes Back. Plush was closed so Craig drove to Nostralis for some yummy gluten-free vegan pizza.

Last time when we went there, we enjoyed the Garlic Pizza and Vindaloo Pizza very much, so Craig decided get them again. He also picked the Spinach Pizza and Mexicana Pizza.

Nostralis is very different than other veg*n pizza joints. They don't use stuff like vegie sausages or fried tofu. Their gluten-free base is pretty good and they put a shite load of Cheezly on the pizza too.

I loved the complex flavour of the Vindaloo Pizza. The combination of ingredients (Tomato, Cheese, Banglore Beans, Peppers, Sultanas, Hot Spices, Banana, Onions & Vindaloo Curry Paste) is very unusual but it works.

I didn't like the Mexicana Pizza much. It was like bland Chilli on a pizza base.

We also had the Garlic Pizza and Spinach Pizza (sans Fetta and Egg). They were both fresh, simple and nice.

I will go back to try more pizza!

Nostralis Wholemeal Vegetarian PIzza, Eclipse, Protest,

Warning: photos are pretty blurry

Kristy and I love Pizza. We normally get our pizzas from Plush, Eat Pizza and Stefan's. On her Goodbye Gluten Tour, we went to Nostralis Wholemeal Vegetarian Pizza, as recommended by our friends Bec and Craig.

This joint is purely vegetarian and caters for vegans and silly-yaks, I mean coeliacs. They also use wholemeal flour, (mostly) organic fresh vegetables and beans. The price of their pizzas and the Cheezly surcharge is much cheaper than other vegan friendly pizza joints in Melbourne.

Craig and Bec raved about the Garlic Pizza. It was simple, greasy and sinfully yummy. I haven't seen that much cheezly on one single pizza (slightly more than Eat Pizza).

Garlic: Cheezly + Garlic overloaded!

We also ordered a Eggplant Pizza (minus egg) and a Chickpea Pizza. The eggplant Pizza was pretty nice but the bean shoots on the Chickpea Pizza made it taste very salad-ish.

Eggplant: not bad

Chickpeas: meh

I tried a piece of the Vindaloo Pizza (Tomato, Cheese, Banglore Beans, Peppers, Sultanas, Hot Spices, Banana, Onions & Vindaloo Curry Paste). It wasn't spicy at all and full of flavour.

We will go there again to have Garlic Pizza and Vindaloo Pizza, on their gluten-free base.

In other news, there is a new (ish) cafe opened near Satay Bar called Eclipse Specialty Coffee. The coffee is pretty awesome. Worth checking out if you are near by.

Also, there will be a very special rally to support live music venues in Australia on Tuesday, 3 Feb 2010. It will start around 4pm in front of State Library. You can also sign the petition here.

Gluten Free Eat Pizza and Jelly Beans

Today is my first official gluten free day, and I have loads of gluteny posts from all of my last gluteny meals but right now I want to talk about my first gluten free day. Two things make it better, first vegan strongman Ivan gave me gluten free vegan jellybeans. They are pretty awesome and taste quite fruity, except for the green flavoured one, why do green jellybeans suck so much?

It was far too hot to cook, so we went to Eat Pizza. Eat pizza, is a regular pizza place that just happens to have soy cheese (cheezly) and vegan salami. Their wholemeal and gluten free bases are vegan, but I'm not sure about the regular pizza base. They have a store in Glenroy, and Maribyrnong but I've only ever been to the Maribyrnong one, although it looks like the Glenroy store is just as yummy. Ivan and Toby shared a small garlic wholemeal pizza:

It was Ivan's first trip to Eat pizza and like us he was impressed with the amount of the cheezly, although both Toby and him agreed that they thought the garlic pizza wasn't garlicy enough.

They also shared a margarita with vegan salami and both agreed this was their favourite. Sadly the salami is not gluten free though. And again check out how much cheezly?

I tried their gluten free base, with the traditional vegetarian toppings plus pineapple. Gluten free bases tends to be thinner, but this was by far the best gluten free pizza that I have had so far, although I must admit I have only had 3 g/f pizzas. They made their own g/f bases, the crust was still a little hard, and the pizza itself is hard to cut into it, but it was really pleasant to eat. No major issues at all and really not that different to regular pizza. Big thumbs up from g/f me and the gluten eaters.

Gluten Free Plush Pizza

Plush Pizza, is a vegetarian pizza place with a small eat in area which is perfect if you live on the other side of town, like we do. It's an old fave of ours, we used to eat there once a week at one stage, but this is the first time that I tried their gluten free bases. I was pleased to talk to Ben (who owns the place) and discover that all of the sauces and toppings, apart from the soy sausages are gluten free. It was great to talk to someone and feel completely confident that they get the whole gluten free thing and know to look out for things like wheat based caramel added to sauces etc.

We shared a satay pizza, my favourite, with zucchini, mushrooms, tofu and coriander:

and ben special (my second fav with avocado, pesto, tomato, mushrooms and a little dash of chilli and balsamic vinegar:
I have to admit the g/f crusts were a little disappointing though, nowhere near as good as the gluteny version. Really thin, and the edges were really hard. I can't fault Plush though since they buy their gluten free bases from some gluten free place, maybe silly yaks although don't quote me on that. They are significantly more expensive too at $5.50 extra for a large g/f pizza, so I really will have to save it for special treats.

Still it's good to know I can still have the same pizzas in my gluten free world. Now I just need to find easy gluten free pizza recipes to make at home, anyone have any fool proof ones?
